Science Research Project Ideas from our Sponsors

Our sponsors are a very important part of the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair. To increase the number of projects to be considered for a Sponsor Award, Sponsors have supplied us with project criteria to encourage students to conduct research related to the sponsor’s field of interest.

Research Projects Related to ALCOSAN
An award will be presented to one Senior Division student project that deals with environmental pollution. The project should demonstrate knowledge of the subject area and concern for water quality.

Research Projects Related to American Society for Quality
American Society for Quality will present an award to a student who applies quality techniques to his/her project.

Research Projects Related to ASM International, Golden Triangle Chapter
An award will be presented to one Science Fair student project in the field of materials science and engineering. The winning project will be chosen based on the following: a) project must be based on some aspect of materials-related concepts, for example: solidification processing, heat treatment, mechanical testing, corrosion, etc.; b) clarity of presentation; c) demonstration of a clear understanding of the scientific method; d) aesthetics - project layout, neatness, readability, etc.

Research Projects Related to Allegheny-Singer Research Institute at AGH
An award will be presented to three Senior Division student projects preferably in medicine/health/microgiology that involves circulatory (cardiac disease and stroke), genetics, genomics or medical devices.

Research Projects Related to Bridges
An award will be given to one student for a project which demonstrates creativity and knowledge in topics related to design, construction or materials of bridges. This award is sponsored by the Association for Bridge Construction and Design.

Research Projects Related to CONSOL Energy, Inc.
CONSOL Energy Inc. will present two student awards for projects that demonstrate creativity, significant knowledge, and insight related to the production or use of energy, including fossil energy sources, alternative energy sources, and the environmental issues related to efficient energy production and conservation. Winning projects may also include creative or innovative applications of energy sources and may be based upon any of a wide range of sciences and technologies including geology, chemistry, physics, engineering, life science, environmental science, or social science.

Research Projects Related to Electrical and Electronics Engineering - IEEE Award
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will present two awards in the field of electrical and e lectronics engineering. Winning projects will demonstrate significant knowledge of electrical principles, electronics, computer design, software development or mathematical techniques. Students are encouraged to submit projects to the Science Fair categories such as Engineering, Computer, Physical Science, etc. to be considered for this award.

Research Projects Related to PPG Industries, Inc.
PPG Industries, Inc. will present awards for projects involving chemistry, engineering, or material science which demonstrate creativity and knowledge in topics related to coatings, fiberglass, or optically transparent materials such as eye-wear. The work may embrace any of the areas related to color, adhesion, transparency, and material strength.

Research Projects Related to the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health
The National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) is the Federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related disease and injury. The Institute is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. NIOSH is responsible for conducting research on the full scope of occupational disease and injury ranging from lung disease in miners to carpal tunnel syndrome in computer users. An award will be presented to one Science Fair student project of the sponsor's choice. The winning project will demonstrate science and knowledge generated from occupational safety and health work.

Research Projects Related to Pittsburgh Geological Society
TEAM Award - PGS will present an award in the TEAM Category. In addition, one award additional award will be selected. Awards will be presented for geoscience projects that examine how the geologic basis of our environment relates to everyday life. Ideas for project topic areas include the following. A rock stratagraphic column is a good place to start. Mineral resources are an important part of the Pennsylvania economy and the legacy of historic mining still causes problems of acid mine drainage, mine subsidence and hazardous materials contamination. Coal, ol and gas development can interact with rural and urban development and affect both the quality and quantity of surface and groundwater resources. Knowledge of the various types of rock and their properties relating to mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics, geotechnical engineering and the durability of building materials, even gravestones. Fossils are important to understanding the role of evolution in a changing historical landscape and understanding differences in depositional environments. Western PA even has volcanic rocks. Visit Pittsburgh Geological Society.

Research Projects Related to Sigma XI - Carnegie Mellon University
Sigma XI - Carnegie Mellon University awards a student in any discipline of science or mathematics for a project that shows innovation, dilligence, reference to everyday life and quantitative analysis. Impressed by scientific sampling (large sample size) and good ideas - with or without the aid of a scientific mentor.

Research Projects Related to Spectroscopy
An award will be presented by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh to the six Science Fair student projects and teachers in spectroscopy, optics, lens, prisms, mirrors, dispersion, interference; three from Senior and three from Intermediate/Junior Divisions. Winning projects will involve topics dealing with spectroscopy.

Research Projects Related to Society of Women Engineers
Two student awards will be presented in the field of engineering - one for a middle school student and one for a high school student.

Research Projects Related to Engineering with applications to the Steel Industry.
United States Steel Corporation will present two Science Fair awards in the field of engineering with applications to the steel industry. Winning projects will demonstrate significant knowledge of one or more aspects of the steelmaking process, the properties of steel or an application of steel.

Research Projects Related to Energy and Engineering
An award will be presented to four science fair student projects and teachers in the field of Engineering. One in each division and a TEAM award. Winning projects should demonstrate creative ideas for generating electricity. This award is sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Company.
